Like the character of Horatio Hornblower from C.S. Forester’s sea tales, which influenced Chandler’s writings, Grimes is a solitary, pioneering figure in the cold, dark outpost of the Rim Worlds.  Chandler also received praise for the dystopic tale, The Bitter Pill (1974) and the parallel-world battle for Australian independence in Kelly Country (1976).  Chandler died in 1984.
